POSITION: Cook at the Consul-General’s Residence
CLOSING DATE: Sunday, 6 March 2016.
WORK HOURS: Full-time; 48 hours/6 days per week
STARTING SALARY: Starting salary will be determined on the basis of qualifications and experience.
The Australian Consul-General is looking for a qualified person to fill the position of cook at his Official Residence.
Basic Functions:
- Prepare high-quality, interesting meals with an international menu for formal sit-down functions with up to 14 guests
- Prepare high-quality, interesting meals with an international menu in an informal buffet format for functions of up to 30 guests
- Prepare family meals according to the guidance of the Consul-General’s spouse
- Maintain the kitchen in a pristine clean condition
- Keep records of ingredients used for official functions to assist with accounting
- When required, order or shop for food and groceries
- When required, assist with other household tasks
- Other duties as required
Selection Criteria:
- Ability to cook a range of high-quality dishes from Western and Asian cuisines.
- Ability to prepare and cook menus for official functions, including up to 14 persons seated formal dining or up to 30 persons buffet-style.
- Five years of job-related experience.
- A high standard of cleanliness and hygiene.
- Able to work well in a team.
- Flexibility, including willingness to adjust working days and hours to meet requirements.
- A high standard of professional behaviour and good presentation.
- Honesty and discretion.
- Sufficient English – spoken, reading and writing.
- International or 5 star hotel restaurant experience would be an advantage.
- Willingness to learn new cuisines

Short-listed applicants may be asked to demonstrate their skills by cooking one or more meals at a mutually-convenient time. In this case the applicant will be paid for the hours worked.

General conditions
- Normal working hours would be from 10am to 8pm (with a 2 hour break for lunch) six days per week, although hours may be adjusted at the Consul-General’s discretion. Where official functions require it, he or she can expect to work overtime.
- The Consul-General’s personal domestic staff are expected to maintain a high standard of professional behaviour, be courteous and well presented, and respect and protect the privacy of the Consul-General and his family.
- In addition to a salary appropriate to the employee’s skills and experience, domestic staff members will be paid a Diwali bonus equivalent to 1 month of salary (pro-rated), plus a Rs. 500 per month as a tea allowance.
- The employees will also be provided with medical insurance and worker’s compensation insurance. The Consul-General’s domestic staff are expected to wear a uniform, which will be supplied.
- The employee will receive 20 days of recreation leave per year, plus Consulate public holidays. Leave should be taken during the year in which it is earned and during periods that the Consul-General and his or her spouse are out of Chennai.
- The specific six days on which the employee will work in any given week is at the discretion of the Consul-General – on occasions the employee may be asked to work on Sunday and take his or her day off during the normal working week.
- The Consul-General’s domestic staff are personal employees who are appointed on an annual contract for the term of his or her posting (normally 3 or 4 years).
