                                    ‘Australian Global Alumni Ambassador’

Australia’s High Commissioner to India, Harinder Sidhu this evening appointed Biocon Chairperson and Managing Director Dr Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw as an Australian Global Alumni Ambassador at a prestigious event in Bangalore.  Of twelve Australian Global Alumni Ambassadors, Dr Mazumdar-Shaw is the only Ambassador from India.

High Commissioner Sidhu said ‘I am delighted that Dr Mazumdar-Shaw has agreed to become an Australian Global Alumni Ambassador.  Her work sets a great example not just of the value of an Australian education, but also for young women considering a career in science, engineering technology or mathematics.’

In 1974, Dr Mazumdar-Shaw came to Australia to study malting and brewing at the Ballarat Institute of Advanced Education, a predecessor to Federation University.  She went on to found Biocon in Bangalore, which has grown to become India’s largest biopharmaceutical company.

The High Commissioner noted that Dr Mazumdar-Shaw’s appointment reflected a growing awareness of the quality and rich experience of an Australian education.

‘More than 2.5 million international students have chosen Australia for their studies.  With seven of the world’s top 100 universities and five of the best 30 cities for students, Australia offers a world class-education in a safe, multicultural environment.’

To help Australian alumni connect with Australia and each other, the Australian Consulate-General in Chennai and Australian High Commission have worked to support the creation of an Australian Alumni Association’s in India.  The AAA currently has chapters in Chennai, Bangalore, Hyderabad, as well as New Delhi, Mumbai, governed by a National Executive Committee.  For more information contact [email protected]
