                                                                            Australia supports the Women’s Wheelchair Basketball Team from India

Australian Consulate-General, Chennai is delighted to support the Wheelchair Basketball Federation of India (WBFI) with a Direct Aid Program grant of INR 2,58,775. This grant will assist the women wheelchair basketball team to participate in a 6-day ‘wheelchair basketball development camp’ in Chon Buri, Thailand from 16-21 April.

This training camp, hosted by IWBF Asia Oceania Zone is designed to teach players the fundamental skills of wheelchair basketball in a fun and stress free environment. This will be the first time this team from India consisting of 2 coaches and 10 players will travel internationally, train and interact with international coaches and players.

At the formal send-off event for the team, Australian Consul-General in Chennai, Mr Sean Kelly said, “We are pleased to be able to support this very talented team and I am sure this international exposure will greatly support their development as basketball players and coaches. I look forward to seeing them play in an international forum soon.”

The 10 women players and two coaches selected by WBFI for the development camp are:

Coaches: Dr. Chetna Chaudhary, Rajasthan, Mr. Nikhilesh Sharma, Chatisgarh

Players: Hima Kalyani. B – Karnataka, Alphonsa Thomas – Kerala, Nisha Gupta - Maharashtra, Nisha Gopalakrishnan – Kerala, Vinolia Violet L. - Tamil Nadu, Sini Saju – Kerala, R. Hindu - Tamil Nadu, Poovammal. S. - Tamil Nadu, Satyavathi. P - AP, Malathy Raja - Tamil Nadu.
