Madras Week Celebrations 2015: Australia in Chennai: A Photographic Exhibition on 60 years of Australian Cricket History in the City

The Australia A Cricket Team, cricketing legend Sunil Gavaskar and acting Australian Consul-General to South India, Jon Bonnar, recently launched a photographic exhibition on 60 years of Australian Cricket History in Chennai as part of the annual Madras Week Celebrations.

The exhibition captures memorable and historic moments from cricket matches played by Australia in Chennai since 1956 and will be open to the public from the 8th to 23rd of August 2015 at the lobby of the Hotel Crowne Plaza Chennai Adyar Park.

Visit to Hyderabad by Australian Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Minister for Trade and Investment, the Hon Steven Ciobo MP, 23-25 June 2015

Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister for Foreign Affairs and the Minister for Trade and Investment, the Hon Steven Ciobo MP, led a business delegation to the rapidly growing South Indian regional hub of Hyderabad from 23-25 June 2015. Mr Ciobo met senior leaders of the governments of Andhra Pradesh and Telangana including the Chief Minister of Andhra Pradesh Mr Chandrababu Naidu and the Minister for Industries of Telangana Mr Jupally Krishana Rao. The visit aimed to showcase Australia’s capabilities in infrastructure, health and tropical medical services to meet the economic development priorities of the region. Mr Ciobo inaugurated the Australian Food Week at the Park Hyatt Hyderabad and helped launch the executive committee of the newly established Australian Alumni Association Chapter in Hyderabad.

The Australian Film Showcase, Chennai, 12-21 June 2015

The Australian Consulate-General in Chennai, with the support of SAE Institute and Tourism Australia, organised the inaugural edition of the Australian Film Showcase initiative in Chennai with a Red Carpet Gala Dinner event at the Taj Coromandel, Chennai on 12 June 2015. The event brought together leading names from the Tamil Film Industry including veteran actors, directors and producers along with senior business leaders in Chennai. Former Australian Cricketer and Director of MRF Pace Foundation Mr Glen McGrath was the guest of honour at the event. Eleven Australian films were screened at Escape, SPI Cinemas Chennai between 13 and 21 June 2015. The screenings were inaugurated by renowned South Indian actor Ms Gautami Tadimalla.

Australian Alumni Excellence Awards India 2015
 

 

The Australian Alumni Association (AAA), supported by the Australian Consulate-General in Chennai & Austrade, organised an awards ceremony for the winners of the inaugural Australian Alumni Excellence Awards India 2015 on 6 June 2015 at the ITC Grand Chola, Chennai. The awards were given out across a number of categories and were decided by a panel of high profile jury members including Ms Kiran Mazumdar Shaw, Chairman, Biocon Ltd, Mr N Ram, Chairman, Kasturi and Sons Ltd and Publisher of The Hindu group of publications, Mr Michael Kasprowicz, former Australian Cricketer and other senior members from business, academia and other sectors in India and Australia. The Awardees were the following:

1. Entrepreneurship and Industry Excellence: Ms Carolin Praba of VCare and Mr Shishir Baijal of Knight Frank
2. Education and Public Service: Dr Renati J Solomon of KBP Institute, Vashi
3. Science and Technology: Dr T C Rao
4. Sports, Art and Culture: Mr Suhail Chandhok, Cricketer and Star Sports Presenter
5. Food, Travel, Leisure: Mr Vikas Panjabi of The Chocolate Room
6. Young Achiever Award: Dr Debayan Pakashi of IIT Kanpur
7. Community Service (Citizen of theYear): Mr GovindaKrishnan of Nethrodaya


AAA also bestowed a Lifetime Achievement Award to the historian and writer Mr S Muthiah for his contribution to Indo-Australian relations.

100th Anniversary ANZAC Day Commemorations

25th of April 2015 marked the 100th anniversary of the landing of Australian troops on the shores of Gallipoli in Turkey as part of World War I. The Consulate-General organised a Dawn Service at the Madras War Cemetery, a traditional Gunfire breakfast, a photographic exhibition and a private screening of Russel Crowe’s film ‘The Water Diviner’ at PVR Cinemas.
